B Corp Climate Standards: A Wake-Up Call for SME Leadership
In 2025, B Lab introduced a bold new direction for B Corp certification. Gone is the flexible scoring model that allowed businesses to pick and choose their strengths. In its place: a set of non-negotiable requirements across seven core impact areas. One of the most significant? Climate Action.
For SME leaders, who represent 88% of the business population, this is more than a policy update – it’s a strategic inflection point. Yet, only 11% of SMEs have set a net zero target, compared to over half of large organisations.
Many B Corp SMEs are now expected to publish a Climate Action Plan from day one and show measurable progress within three years, but 66% cite high costs and 57% cite lack of finance or grants as significant barriers. Nearly half (47%) report a lack of expertise, and 46% say they lack trusted information sources. Only 7% have accessed government-backed support, and 25% of SMEs see no business benefit from cutting emissions.
This shift places climate performance on the same level as financial performance. And while larger companies may have the resources to absorb this change, many SMEs are left wondering how to respond without derailing day-to-day operations.
But here’s the opportunity: this isn’t just about compliance, it’s about leadership. Businesses that embrace these standards early can position themselves as credible, future-ready, and values-driven. They’ll be better placed to attract investment, win customer trust, and build resilience in a rapidly changing market.
